Meet the Candidates: Shelby County Unified School Board District 2 (Updated July 15 2012)

Teresa Jones and Tyree Daniels are candidates for the permanent commissioner seat representing “Super” District 2 on the unified Shelby County Board of Education (USB). The winner will serve on the unified School Board for a full four year term.
District 2 includes Frayser and areas north of Summer/Bill Morris Parkway, bounded on the east by McCrory Lane and Austin Peay.

Friday Viewpoint Interviews with District 2 candidates
Teresa Jones, 53, is the District 2 interim USB incumbent, appointed by the Shelby County Commission in October 1, 2011. A native of Byhalia, Mississippi and graduate of Lane College, Ms Jones received her law degree from the University of Memphis School of Law. She has long been active in Memphis’ legal, political, and criminal justice communities. Ms Jones has served since 2003 as Chief City Prosecutor for the City Of Memphis. Previously, she was senior trial attorney and supervisor in the Shelby County Public Defender Office for 15 years. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the Memphis NAACP and active in Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
Ms Jones has taken advantage of her work with the unified School Board to listen to the specific needs and challenges of parents and teachers. She has been endorsed by the Memphis Education Association’s Memphis Political Action Committee for Education (MPACE) and the Shelby County Education Association (SCEA) Political Action Committee for Education. Ms Jones is single.
The Commercial Appeal’s July 15, 2012 Voters Guide included the following quote from Ms Jones:
“I am committed to public education and possess the knowledge, skill and temperament to make decisions in the best interest of all our children and all employees.”

Tyree Daniels, 33, is an investment banker and senior vice president with Raymond James, specializing in public finance. He has been actively engaged in community leadership and volunteer activities since graduating from Christian Brothers University. He currently serves on the board of directors of Wolf River Conservancy, the Shelby Farms Park Advisory committee, and the Leadership Academy Fellows Advisory board. He is a founding board member of the Memphis College Preparatory Elementary School, a charter school he currently serves as chairman. Mr. Daniels has won the District 2 endorsement of Stand for Children, a public education advocacy group.
Mr. Daniels has delivered over 500 speeches across the Southeast on non-profit fundraising, education advocacy, and urban youth development. He is single.
